Children & Psychosocial Activities
Galle
October was a very busy month for the children’s sectors with the World
Children’s Day falling on 1st October. Some of the activities
held to commemorate World Children’s Day were, an art exhibition
for the children at the IAK village, on 31st October
children from all Changer Maker clubs attended a
puppet show sponsored by the UNICEF at Kathuluwa, and in
November, 20 training workshops
on how to conduct children’s programmes
Jaffna
On December 5th teams
from the Dulos took part in various activities in the tsunami devastated
areas. They held programmes to entertain the children with action dramas,
hand work, special games, and Sunday school activities. 1,350
children
participated at this event.
Batticaloa
Due to unstable conditions in the district the children’s day celebrations
were
held on low profile with only songs, games and
dramas held within the camps.
Ragama
During December 21st -
23rd,
a three day camp was held in Boys Town Ragama. 208 children from Jaffna,
Trincomalee, Batticaloa/Ampara, Hendala and Galle,
participated. The camp provided an opportunity for
the children from the affected coastal areas to
come together and share with one
another their traumatic
experiences.
The event concluded with children taking part in much fun and
games.
Livelihood Sector
Galle
A seminar was conducted by the Christian Chamber of Commerce for the
livelihood beneficiaries, The
topics discussed were:
1) Vision
2) Discipline in Business
3) Money Management.

participants attended this seminar
and many of them were challenged toward
successful entrepreneurships.
Jaffna
During the month of October, 34 beneficiaries received fishing nets as well
as grants to begin small scale businesses.
A 3 day training programme was held for the regional livelihood staff. The
focus
at the programme was:
1) Livelihood projects - how and where
2) Goals, Objectives and Planning and Budgeting.
3) Report Writing, Reporting Procedures
Success Stories
Trincomalee
Beneficiaries in Trincomalee were
assisted with
starting poultry farms.
Mullaitivu
Through assessments 150 potential beneficiaries
were
identified. However,
only 30 beneficiaries received
assistance to start small scale businesses in
selling fish, tailoring, opening grocery shops
and vegetable shops.
Boat Project (Livelihood Sector)
Jaffna
In early November, at a ceremony in Thalaiadi 40 beneficiaries were
equipped with new boats, engines and
fishing nets. Warranty cards for the engines were also handed over to the
beneficiaries in Chulipuram and Seenthipanthal.
Permanent Housing Sector
Galle
Construction of 23 houses began at Walahanduwa, of which 3 houses have been
completed
up to the foundation level, 3
houses up
to the sill level, 4 houses up to the
lintel level and 4 houses up to the roof level.
Jaffna
Work was hindered due to the
expansion of
the security zones which included 15 of our houses into the high security
zone. Work on other houses is slowly
progressing.
Batticaloa
134 houses are being rebuilt with the participation of the beneficiaries.
The beneficiaries have been able to construct their houses up to roof level
with the help of the grant given by the government. |
