Emergency Relief Distributed in Jaffna

15 May 2007 – Relief packs containing flour, sugar, milk powder, tea, biscuits, soap, washing powder and shampoo were distributed to 250 families in Point Pedro. Unfortunately, the military situation and the fishing ban persist. 

17 April 2007 - Alliance Development Trust distributed emergency relief items to 247 internally displaced families in Karainagar and Thumpalai, East Point Pedro. These people have been affected by the war and the Tsunami. They have repeatedly lost their properties, livelihoods, and livestock.

Their situation worsened after a fishing ban was imposed in that area and now they are struggling to survive. They are malnourished and helpless. The government distributes some dry rations, but these are inadequate. 

Alliance Development Trust distributed 247 packs of dry rations containing rice, flour, dhal, sugar, Soya, tea, milk powder and biscuits. Soap, toothpaste and candles were also distributed. 

Raja, one of the beneficiaries, said, “We are very thankful for your support. It has helped us and encouraged us. We have suffered a lot since the 11th of August. We have no food, fuel, or medicines. After the ban on fishing, we lost our only mean of income. Our children do not have school supplies and above all we have no freedom or peace in our hearts. We get little or no help here. We heard that many NGOs have distributed relief items to other areas but no one has come here yet. All we have are the rations given by the government, which are out of our reach. We cannot buy anything because we do not have the money – there is no source of income for us anymore. In such a time as this, Alliance Development Trust has helped us.”
