Introduction

In 2005, the ethnic conflict which has existed for almost three decades between the government forces and the Liberation Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE) intensified. As a result, innocent civilians had to leave their homes and flee for their lives. Malnutrition and appalling living conditions of refugees stirred the local and international communities.

Natural disasters, such torrential rain, floods and landslides, which occurred during the latter part of 2006, brought certain parts of the country to their knees. The 2004 Tsunami, claimed over 40,000 lives, leaving the coastal villages of the country in a state of shock and despair.

Alliance Development Trust has continuously engaged in emergency relief in many affected areas, providing not only on-the-spot assistance, but also involving the communities in long-term sustainable development.
