Cleaning of public wells at the Sivagauri Fisherman’s club

A series of well cleaning projects were carried out by the ADT team in the Sivagauri fisherman’s society. Under this project a total of 6 wells were cleaned and handed over to this community. Of the wells cleaned, two were public wells used by 10-15 families; two were primary school wells and two wells which had been solely set apart as drinking far school children.

Most of the wells cleaned were at a depth of 25’. The wells were badly contaminated with garbage, polythene, pieces of glass, nails, mud, dead fish etc. The villagers and the school children in this community helped to clean the wells. Chlorine was used to purify the water.

The villagers were happy to get their wells cleaned before the commencement of the rainy season. They are now using these wells for bathing purposes and for drinking water. The responsibility of maintaining these wells are now in the hands of the villagers. ADT was the first organisation to conduct a health service of this nature in this village

Well cleaning project at Ambal Fisheries Society

ADT has been helping the Ambal fisheries society in the past few years by providing them with boats, nets and machines for fishing. Around 385 people live in this village, and most of the wells in this village were damaged and polluted. Under this project ADT cleaned 5 wells in Ambal.

Altogether 3 of the wells cleaned were used by the public and served between 25-30 families per well.  The 4th well was located beside a school and was mainly used by the children for the purpose of drinking water. The 5th well was located near a temple and was also being used for the purpose of drinking water. All five wells were in a very bad state, fully polluted and not fit for human consumption.

Some of these wells had never been cleaned and hence was full of garbage and mud and a few were damaged as well. After cleaning the wells and purifying the water with chlorine the wells are now being used for bathing and drinking without any fear of water borne diseases.

Public well cleaning at Marutapuram Fisheries Society

Marutapuram Fisheries Society consists of 130 families; they are mainly labourers and fishermen. There are four wells located in this society.  Two of them were set apart for drinking purposes and the other two for bathing purposes. The ADT team chose to clean the two wells which were being used for drinking purposes.

The first well used by 50 families was mostly used by the children for drinking. This well was almost fully damaged and polluted. The ADT team was the 1st to clean this well.

The 2nd well used by 30 families was for drinking and bathing purposes. This well was 26 feet deep and was cleaned with chlorine and is now in a good condition and can be used by everyone in the community.

ADT conducted an awareness programme for children on hygiene and at a meeting of the society, the wells were entrusted to the respective communities to maintain them.
