Mary
Mary 53 is a resident in New Village Batticaloa and worships at the Kingdom Evangelical Mission Church. When the Tsunami struck her whole house was washed away along with all what they possessed leaving only the boundary walls as a memento to a once beautiful home. Mary is a mother of five children. Her husband used to work at the Timber Corporation as a Government service officer. He lost this job after being displaced by the tsunami, leaving them with no income to survive. They were compelled to build a small hut and live there with the help of relief which they got from various other NGO’s etc. Before they came to live in the small hut they lived at refugee camps for about 6 months. Mary and her family were given a house by a NGO with the help of the local Government. Still their problems were not completely solved as they had no income and a livelihood to live on. This is when ADT reached her where she got a loan of Rs.10, 000/= to start up a small shop. Now Mary and her family earn a profit of about Rs.1000/= per day with income of over Rs.5000/=. She has grocery stocks worth Rs.50, 000/= in the shop. “This is enough for us to live, for us to provide our selves with food to eat and to send my children to school and other necessary work. I have given three children in marriage with the money that I earn from the shop and I want to thank ADT for providing us this loan and for making our lives better” said Mary. “We were totally displaced earlier and didn’t know how to provide food for my family and children. Now I have no problem as ADT has really saved our lives and I’m very grateful to ADT for all the help they have given us. I hope they will continue to help us in the future to develop my business” she added. |
