Leelawathy

Leelawathi was orphaned at a very young age. When she contracted leprosy her relatives admitted her to the leprosy hospital in 1970. Thereafter no one visited her. Now she is totally cured but has no relatives or a home to go to. As she needed an occupation to support herself, ADT helped her identify something she could do. ADT taught her to make ‘bucket lamps’ with transparent coloured paper. These lamps are lit with candles which are fixed on to the bucket lamp. These lamps are used by devotees for religious festivals and are a seasonal product. This venture enables Leelawathi to earn LKR 1000 per month. To increase her income, Leelawathi is contemplating exploring new ventures in the future.
