Street Drama at Horton plains & Borupana

25 April 2009

The subtle theme of HIV and AIDS was presented to the public in the Nuwara Eliya District in the form of a Street Drama. 25 volunteers took part in the program in the areas of Horton plains and Borupana. The theme of this drama was “Protect your self from HIV & AIDS epidemic”.  Around 200 persons gathered around the town to watch the drama.

The drama related a timely message by showing how bad habits like using drugs, alcoholism, and vulnerable behaviors could lead to HIV and AIDS.

Another drama was acted out at the entrance of Horton Plains. The story depicted of a poor family, where the father of the house didn’t have a job and couldn’t supply the needs of the family. Ultimately the father tends to be vulnerable to alcohol and commercial sex workers and he ends up abusing his daughter. This story demonstrated the high possibilities of getting infected with the HIV virus.

During the Street Dramas about 500 brochures in Sinhala and Tamil were distributed. The brochures contained information on HIV/AIDS, the impact it has on society, the difference between HIV and AIDS, how the virus spreads and how to avoid it, the HIV test and how to live with the disease.

This program created a great impact on the participants as it gave them a clear knowledge and understanding on what HIV virus is, how it spreads, and how to get protected. The participants were highly interested in the brochures distributed. Many people commented on the effort ADT has taken in order create an awareness about this deadly disease as most people don’t know the dangers of this epidemic as it is not been spoken openly.
