HIV and AIDS is a highly stigmatized epidemic, and in many communities, infected individuals are ostracized or excluded from the community. Due to this they lose the support they had from the society and being part of the social network. A great part of the rural economy depends on labor-intensive activities such as agriculture, fishing and other manual work. HIV epidemic leads to more sick days and a reduction in productivity, which may result in loss of livelihood.
Taking all these facts into consideration, Project Positive along with Lanka+ organization conducted a one day workshop for 25 People Living with HIV & AIDS (PLWHs) on the 24th of June 2009, at Pamunugama. At this workshop they were trained to make greeting cards as a domestic micro income industry.
The programme was conducted by Mrs. Ritsa who has remarkable experience in the field of designing. Topics such as basic color structure, color combination, design principles, new techniques and basic principles were taught. Soon after the session the participants were given an opportunity to try out what they learned. The participants displayed great talents by coming up with creative designs.
Whilst Project Positive was committed to provide the necessary material and the equipment to the participants, the team was greatly encouraged as the participants assured to make greeting cards as a livelihood.
