EMERGENCY
RELIEF FOR FAMILIES AFFECTED BY
FLOODS
AND EARTHSLIPS
During the last few months torrential rains lashed across most of the
Eastern, Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Western, Central and Uva Provinces of Sri
Lanka, leaving thousands of families without shelter and basic needs. Due to
the danger of landslides villagers were asked to evacuate their homes. Most of
who returned were dismayed to find their homes buried
under layers of mud. These people were given temporary shelter under makeshift
tents, religious institutions and schools.
Alliance Development Trust, through its Relief and Development Sector
organized relief packs containing dry rations to be distributed in Badulla,
Welimada in the Uva province, Wallapane in the Central
province and Vavunia in the Northern province.
BADULLA
Badulla, the capital of the Uva
Province, the second least populated province in Sri Lanka, stands around 2200
feet above sea level. Surrounded by the famous “Badulu Oya”, this region is
covered with lush Tea Plantations. Overshadowed by the Namunukula mountain
range, Badulla is richly steeped in Buddhist culture and heritage.
On
20th March, NCEASL assisted by UPC Church Badulla, the Grama
Niladharis of Wewassa & Thelbedde, provided dry ration packs to 200
families affected by floods and earth slips in the Badulla region. Subsequently,
