A Parenting Programme was organized to train and equip parents as well as to create support groups to benefit the whole community.
The first Parenting Programme was held in Kokkadichcholai on the 31st of March 2010. Nine mothers participated the session. The topics discussed were on ‘the importance of a mother’ and ‘good mental health’. The role of a mother in the household was explained to the parents. The parents spoke about the different responsibilities they carried out in their households.
On maintaining good mental health, the mothers were taught the importance of leading a balanced life. Since a mother’s role is very stressful having to look into all household chores and rearing the children as well, the mothers were advised to share their troubles with a trustworthy person in order to relieve their stress and pressure.
The importance of being at peace with their neighbours and living in harmony with society was explained to the mothers. A happy heart and mind leads to a healthy life with less physical ailments.
The importance of having a support group helping each other and meeting regularly was encouraged. The parents agreed to meet every Tuesday.
