The regions of Batticaloa, Colombo, and South conducted special programmes in view of World Children’s Day (October 1ST) during the week 1st to 7th October.
BATTICALOA
The Batticaloa Special Programme was held on the 6th of October.
Children from two clubs, Karuwappankerny and Kallady participated in the competitions. Both the Art and Essay Competitions started at 9.30 am and ended at 11.30 am. The turnout for this programme was very good. The children were able to choose which competition they would like to take part in. All the children will be awarded certificates of participation.
The Valathapitiya Change Makers Club also held special Essay and Art competitions to mark this day. The children also took part in a dance competition which was undoubtedly a favorite.
DEHIWALA
A Sports Meet was organized for the children of the Dehiwala Club. Registrations were done before
the programme so that the number of participants would be known and the programme could be planned around that number. This programme was also held on the 6th of October.
The Sports Meet started at 8.30am with 65 children participating. A variety of games were organized for the children. The children who participated ranged from the age of four and up. So the games were organized in such a manner that all the children would get a chance to participate in games that were age-appropriate.
The games included eating of buns, lime and spoon, running races, balloon challenge, water relays,food relays and many more. It was very encouraging to see the parents take part in this programme by way of cheering and showing their support for the children.
Many other parents whose children were not participating, as well as children who were not part of the Changemaker club also came to watch the days proceedings. The running races were enjoyed above all other events by the children. The fathers who attended were also given a chance to take part in these races.
The Sports Meet ended around 12.15pm. Each of the children was given small tokens for their participation. Before the children left, they were given a few snacks and sweets. The children will be given certificates for their participation as well. This would be done before the end of this month.
WATTALA
The Wattala Change Makers Club organized a Shramadana (cleaning campaign) in view of this special week. Their programme was held on the 7th of October. The Shramadana was conducted within the Palliyawatta, St. Mary’s Church Grounds. The Change Makers Club also meets within these premises.
76 children took part in this programme. Firstly, all the children meet together and were separated in to groups. Afterwards each of these groups was assigned a particular area within the church grounds to get to work! At the end of the day everyone was pleased to see the fruits of their hard labour. The grounds, as they described it themselves, were sparkling clean. Each of the children was given refreshments and lunch. Sports goods were distributed to the children at the end of this programme. The children would also be getting certificates for their participation in this project.
GALLE
The southern region brought together children from six Change Makers Clubs. The clubs participating
were from Bussa, Parape, Katholuwa and Galle and 2 from Hikkaduwa,.
This special programme was held at the DRC church in Galle on the 5th of October. Art, Dancing and Singing competitions were the agenda of the day. The children were divided into appropriate age groups. The Art competition seemed to be more popular with the children. The art competitions were held in advance in each of the clubs. Sixty Children took part.
The children also did a few dramas. The topics that were touched upon through these dramas reflected the ideas of peace and helping the needy.
HAMBANTOTA
The Change Makers Clubs in Hambantota also celebrated this special week with children getting together and performing Songs and drama items.
