New Change Makers Club in Tamil Nadu, Orugoda Watta

8 March 2008

A small settlement of 1000 Tamil families located at Orugodawatta in the outskirts of Colombo is popularly known as ‘Tamil Nadu’. This community lives in poverty and making ends meet is an immense struggleDue to unemployment most of the youth here are addicted to drugs and strong liquor. Also due to the dire levels of poverty within this community most of the children do not go to school.

Taking into consideration the dismal life style of this community, ADT decided to launch a Change Makers Club in Tamil Nadu to reach out and help the children and youth of the area.

On the 8th of March 2008, the 1st Change Makers Club was introduced to the community with a small programme explaining the objectives of the club. It was very encouraging to see 150 children and 50 parents participate at the 1st programme. The Programmes Manager of NCEASL spoke to all present about the organization while the Children’s worker for the Colombo region explained about the Change Makers Club and how it functions. This was followed by a time of games for the children which helped to bring them together.
